The Design Matters homes tour is open to all, from design enthusiasts to professionals, builders to homemakers, students to senior citizens, and is a highlight of the 2011 Architecture + Design Festival, presented by the American Institute of Architects Portland. The Belluschi House

Architect:  Pietro Belluschi

This famed and rarely-toured home in Willamette Heights was designed by renowned Portland architect Pietro Belluschi in the mid-century modern style. Completed in 1948, it was the last house he designed before becoming the Dean of the MIT School of Architecture & Planning. Said to be his favorite home that he designed, Belluschi purchased the property upon returning to Portland in 1973, and lived there the rest of his life. Over the last several years, the restoration, renovations, and additions have been carefully integrated into the original home by Anthony Belluschi, FAIA.

Ankeny Lofts

Architect:  COLAB Architecture + Urban Design

The car-free and bicycle-friendly Ankeny Lofts are two live-work duplex buildings that share an internal courtyard between them, complete with a bicycle garage for each unit. The lofts are oriented toward the south, which allows ample sunlight to fill the open-plan designs. Three of the units have access to a private outdoor area and a fourth is designed for street-level commercial retail space. Both buildings feature sustainable design elements such as green roofs, on-site storm water treatment, and pervious pavers.

NW Raleigh House

Architect:  Giulietti/Schouten AIA Architects, P.C.

This mid-70’s contemporary home was originally a small one-bedroom designed by an owner-architect who now lives next door. In keeping with the original spirit of the “house in the trees,” the new design adds an in-house office, two bedrooms, and expands the interior spaces, all while retaining its classic Northwest style.

Cape Cod House

Architect:  Benjamin Waechter, Architect                                             

This AIA award-winning remodel dramatically transformed an existing 1947 single-story Cape Cod-style house into a compact and functional modern dwelling. Each level of the new house has a distinct character to meet the needs of the inhabitants: one open room with living, dining and kitchen areas on the first floor; and in stark contrast, a second floor with 4 quiet and calm rooms organized around the central stair. Another significant feature is a rooftop terrace that provides sweeping views of the neighborhood and distant mountains.

Leedy House

Architect:  Paul McKean Architecture LLC

After years of waiting for the perfect renovation project in the SE Portland Garthwick neighborhood, the homeowners finally purchased a 1960’s split level in fall 2010. The remodel added a master-suite level, increased the great room area and volume, and re-fashioned the exterior into a modern home ready for the next century. Major components from the owner’s original house were integrated into the new design, saving valuable time and money for the project while transforming it into a dream home.

Tingley Fortin House

Architect:  Ellen Fortin Design + Architecture

This new single family home sits on a previously undeveloped lot in the historic Laurelhurst neighborhood. While entry is from a busy urban street, the back of the site drops in elevation and perches above Laurelhurst Park. An 80-foot Douglas Fir tree was preserved onsite, and the park views inspired the house design. The home features a master suite on the third floor, common living spaces on the second floor, and a separate living unit on the ground floor for guests or future rental.
